Quebec

Ween, Quebec
Title: Quebec
Artist: Ween

I picked up the new Ween record this week. I gotta say, I really like it. This is exactly what I needed in a record right now. It doesn't take itself too seriously. It isn't "tongue in cheek", despite how many idiotic reviews of it you might read that insist that it is. It's just a good collection of songs.

tgirsch over at Lean Left has a great post about the politics of obesity. It was enough to jar me into making some commentary on this topic of my own.

change of heart

Filed under:— Chris @ 1:04 pm

An amazing story in yesterday's Washington Post. Alabama's Republican Governor, Bob Riley, seems to have had quite the change of heart.

Alabama Gov. Bob Riley (R) -- who for three terms in Congress boasted that he never voted for a tax increase and was elected governor on a promise not to raise taxes -- is proposing to raise state taxes by a record $1.2 billion, eight times the largest previous increase and almost twice what is needed to close a $675 million budget deficit.

vote early and often!

Filed under:— Chris @ 9:22 am

Okay, well, maybe not often. But, feel free to vote early in next month's Metro Council runoff election. Or, if you don't mind waiting in line (but seriously, folks), the official election date:

September 11, 2003 Run-off Election
Polls Open Election Day 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.

The results of the August 7th election mean that a run-off election will be held between Adam Dread, David Briley, Larry Schmittou, and Roy Dale.

Briley and Dread are my choices. Dread, I've mentioned before, is a younger incumbent whose work on the beer board is pretty popular. Briley is one of the few progressive candidates on the ballot. In addition, neither of them ever said this:

"Pat Nolan, the political commentator, said on TV the other night that I'm the most conservative of the group. I plead guilty to that," Schmittou tells the Scene. "People don't like these 25 percent property tax hikes. And certainly I'm against this gay thing. I make no bones about that. I don't agree with that lifestyle, and I don't want gays and lesbians teaching my grandchildren. They recruit. They don't reproduce."

Larry Schmittou, however, did.

This is a run-off election, so the turnout will be even lower than you could possibly imagine, so don't think your vote doesn't count. This election hasn't exactly been a big win for the anti-bigot constituency. Let's do some damage control.

General Elections

Bill PurcellIn case you missed it, August 7th was a general election here in Nashville. Up for grabs were the district Metro Council spots, 5 at-large Metro Council positions, Vice Mayor, and Mayor. Voter turnout was predictably low, with only 19% of the 322,000 registered voters bothering to make it to the polls.

Why? Well, Mayor Bill Purcell was expected to deliver a relatively uncontested landslide (despite 4 other opponents), and Vice Mayor Howard Gentry was unopposed. The only real heat was in the council, which doesn't tend to generate much voter interest.

Triple Feature

This Saturday, we invited our friend Matt over for Steak and Potato Date Night round two. This was because we had leftovers from the previous Steak and Potato Date Night, the night before. Steak and Potato Date Night is pretty much what it sounds like. We get steak. We get potatoes. We get wine. We cook, and we eat. There's some snuggling involved, but for round two (and Matt), we left this part out. Mostly. It turned into quite the movie watching marathon.

sociologists get no love

Just a quick rant here. I read this article on the NYT, about economist Steven Levitt. Aside from being one of the NYT's always slightly odd man-as-god profile articles, it irked me in another way.
