jabber init script

Filed under:— cwage @ 5:36 pm

Well, I finally got a jabber server set up on agenteight.com.

In the process, I discovered that it's a lot safer and more stable to run each transport (the piece that lets you talk to other IMs) in a separate process.

This makes management a little hairy, though, so I whipped up an init script for SYSV init style UNIXes that I think works pretty well.

I wish this was my garage. Okay, the garage is optional. I wish those were my cars.

michael moore sensationalistic, news at 11

Filed under:— cwage @ 1:31 am

Michael Moore recently held a book signing that went a little long and had to be broken up by the cops. Michael Moore claims he was RAIDED.

My friend Kynn was there, though, and painted a slightly different picture.

Frankly, my opinion of him is mixed, and I haven't read any of his books, but I know some of you that read this site (all 3 of you) are fans of his, so you might find it interesting.

disgust

I know this is mostly old news, but I just have to comment on it.

The people that are upset with their compensation after the WTC disaster make ME want to throw up. Some bile-raising quotes for you:

"This is sick. I'm ready to throw up," said Beth Murphy, who lost her husband on 9/11. Yet she might get as much as $1.5 million under the plan - and could request a hearing for more. And she may qualify for more charity funds.

A TLC director, David Golomb, called the fund's $250,000 minimum for non-economic compensation "vastly inadequate," suggesting instead (with a straight face) a $2 million floor.

"This is a sick joke. This is what me and my two children will get for murder?" Murphy said.

Mark Morabito of Auburn, N.Y., whose wife, Laura Lee, was killed in the plane that crashed into the north tower, said life insurance shouldn't be a factor. "Why should people be penalized for planning for their future?" he said.

Just when you think people can't get any more pathetic, they do. Never underestimate the boundlessness of human greed and selfishness.

ICQ 2001b and NAT

Filed under:— cwage @ 8:08 pm

Any of you that have used ICQ behind NAT (and hence on an unroutable private IP) know that in order for file transfers to work, you need to forward a range of ports to your PC, and tell ICQ to use those ports for incoming transfers.

I installed ICQ 2001b a few months ago, only to discover that it was blissfully ignoring my port settings and using random ones -- hence being stopped cold at my firewall. Well, it was a beta -- what do you want. So, I went back to 2000b and forgot about it.

But, I tried it again this week only to find that it's STILL broken. You'd think after months and months they would have fixed it, but no.

So, luckily, I found a workaround, which I am putting up here for everyone's benefit:
